Mursi Woman โ€“ โ€˜Mayoโ€™

Mayoโ€™ is one in a series of incredible photographic images taken by Mario Gerth on his travels through Africa where he visited many of the indigenous tribes staying with families along the way exploring their rituals, culture and individual personalities. โ€˜Mayoโ€™ was exhibited at the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics. She is one of two portraits of Mursi tribeswomen in the collection. I found hers to be particularly entrancing, her posture, her gaze , the almost undetectable defiance that gives away her youth.

Mario Gerth is a world class German photographer who has pursued his passion by documenting his travels through 80 different countries across the globe. My heart literally skipped a beat when I saw these images for the first time. They are powerful and entrancing with a softness of light and richness of texture that emerges boldly from the dark background making it seem almost possible to reach out and touch the skin of the person in the photograph.
