Original Silk Screenprint โ€“ Stage for Attraction in Gold

Weโ€™re excited to introduce this exquisite little silk screen collage original artwork โ€“ one in an edition of five related pieces although each is unique and holds its own character. They form part of a larger body of work entitled Structures of Pretenceโ€exclusive to Curious Egg by emerging artist Alice Hughes.

The Structures of Pretence four-layer screen prints are a development of an installation of three sculptures inspired by puppetry that have anthropomorphic characteristics. I wanted the prints to feel like film stills or a fashion photoshoot to re-contextualise them as props. This strengthened the projects dialogue that centres on themes of masquerade and illusion.โ€ Alice Hughes

The work has been printed by hand using silk screen a method by which specialist inks are pushed through the tiny holes in stretched silk by hand, in masked layers -an ancient method that gives the final work a beautiful matt finish with rich depth of colour and tone. The surface is cut and raised to reveal a carefully selected bold colour or metallic in collaged paper. Like a miniature theatrical stage set, this intimate work has a Modernist twist of limited colours and beautifully pared down enigmatic compositions.

Alice Hughes graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2017 with a Fine Art degree in Painting and Printmaking. Aliceโ€™s work uses the medium of silk screen print to bring physical and conceptual layers of meaning to her work which in its presentation is both beautiful and poignant. We are excited to introduce this body of work from Alice entitled โ€˜Structures of Pretenceโ€™. Each small work has an almost filmic atmosphere with grainy texture, sharp areas of light and blurred shadowy backdrops. Visit Aliceโ€™s Profile Page.
