Sitting Baba

Sitting Baba is one in a series of incredible photographic images taken by Mario Gerth on his travels through India where he visited many of the indigenous people staying with families along the way exploring their rituals, culture and individual personalities. The Babas or โ€˜holy menโ€™, shun modern life to live alone in temples , caves and forests. They choose spiritual wealth instead of possessions and have a gentle slightly magical presence I feel. This image in particular illustrates this as he seems to be levitating effortlessly!

Mario Gerth is a world class German photographer who has pursued his passion by documenting his travels through 80 different countries across the globe. My heart literally skipped a beat when I saw these images for the first time. They are powerful and entrancing with a softness of light and richness of texture that emerges boldly from the dark background making it seem almost possible to reach out and touch the skin of the person in the photograph.
